The four types of question
The real test has 24 questions. They come in four shapes. Knowing the shapes stops you losing marks by mistake.
- Pick one answer from four. This is the most common type. Only one option is right.
- Pick two answers from four. The question tells you to choose two. You need both right to get the mark.
- True or false. You read one sentence and say whether it is true.
- Which statement is correct. You read two sentences and pick the right one.
Read the wording before you answer. The word "two" is easy to miss when a timer is running.
The questions below are the first type, which is the one you will meet most often.
Real practice questions with answers
Here are eight questions from our question bank. The correct answer is marked with a tick. Under each one is a short reason.
Question 1. Which value supports the idea that no one is above the law in the UK?

Why: The rule of law means the law applies to everyone. Judges, police and government ministers must follow it too.
Question 2. Which document, signed in 1215, limited the powers of the English monarch?

- The Domesday Book
- The Treaty of Versailles
Why: Magna Carta was signed in 1215. It was the first time a king had to accept limits on his power.
Question 3. In which year did the First World War begin?
Topic: British History
- 1916

- 1914(correct answer)
- 1918
Why: The First World War started in 1914 and ended in 1918. Learn both dates, because the test asks for either one.
Question 4. How many members are elected to the House of Commons?
Topic: Government & Law
- 450
- 750
- 650(correct answer)
- 550
Why: There are 650 MPs. Each one is elected by the people in one area, called a constituency.
Question 5. What flower is the national symbol of England?
Topic: UK Society
- Daffodil
- Thistle
- Rose(correct answer)
- Shamrock
Why: The rose stands for England. Wales has the daffodil, Scotland the thistle and Northern Ireland the shamrock.
Question 6. The Ashes is a famous cricket series played between which two countries?
Topic: Culture & Traditions
- England and India
- England and Australia(correct answer)
- England and South Africa
- England and Pakistan
Why: The Ashes is a cricket series between England and Australia. The two teams first played for it in 1882.
Question 7. St George’s Day is celebrated in which part of the United Kingdom?
Topic: Culture & Traditions
- England(correct answer)
- Wales
- Scotland
- Northern Ireland
Why: St George is the patron saint of England. His day is 23 April.
Question 8. What is the emergency phone number to call an ambulance in the UK?
Topic: Everyday Life

Why: Call 999 for an ambulance, the police or the fire service. The call is free.

Every question comes from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. We sort them into six topics.
- Values and principles. Democracy, the rule of law and free speech. Read the chapter.
- British history. The Romans, the Normans, the Tudors and both world wars. This is the biggest topic. Read the chapter.
- Government and the law. Parliament, elections, the courts and your rights. Read the chapter.
- UK society. The four nations, the people and the main institutions. Read the chapter.
- Culture and traditions. Sport, music, books, festivals and national days. Read the chapter.
- Everyday life. Money, health, housing and getting on with your neighbours. Practise this topic.
History has the most questions of the six. Give it the most time.
How to revise with questions and answers
Reading answers is useful. Answering questions yourself is better. Do both, in this order.
- Read a topic in the study guide.
- Answer questions on that one topic with practice by topic.
- Read the reason under every question you got wrong. Do not skip the ones you guessed.
- Wait a day, then answer that topic again.
- Once all six topics feel steady, sit a full mock test.
The real test needs 18 out of 24 (75%). Keep practising until you are well past that mark.
